Corn without the Pop!

Sweet corn is one of our desired treats in Malaysia that can be found in abundance when in season. Corn can be a good source of folate as well as thiamine and a rich source of lutein. Most people fancy the caramelized buttered popcorn but this makes it a high in calories. However, air-popped unbuttered popcorn is low in calories and very high in fiber making it a healthy snack.

                Based on the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, cooking sweet corn releases various beneficial nutrients that can greatly reduce the risk of getting heart diseases and even cancer. The level of antioxidants increases as the duration of cooking the corn increases. Furthermore, sweet corn contains a phenolic compound called ferulic acid that can inhibit substances that cause cancer.
